Day 1: The Enchanting Esquipulas and a Sea of Sunflowers
Our journey with Guat2do starts in the storied city of Esquipulas, a place where history and faith intertwine. As we approach the Esquipulas Basilica, the sight of the majestic structure is breathtaking. Inside, we are greeted by the revered Black Christ, an embodiment of the region’s deep spiritual roots. The air is thick with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers, enveloping us in an ambiance of reverence.
But the day has more in store. Just when we think Esquipulas has shown us its all, we find ourselves amidst a sprawling field of sunflowers. As far as the eye can see, these golden blooms reach for the sky, a stunning contrast against the bright blue canvas above. The moment is surreal, like stepping into a vibrant painting where every brushstroke is a sunflower.
Day 2: Unveiling the Secrets of Copan
The next morning, we set off early, our hearts set on unraveling the secrets of the ancient Maya at Copan Ruins. Crossing into Honduras, the landscape around us shifts, hinting at the wonders to come. The ruins of Copan are a tapestry of history and mystery. Our guide walks us through the labyrinth of time, showing us towering temples and intricately carved stelae. Every corner holds a story, every stone whispers tales of a civilization that once thrived.
But Copan is more than its ruins. The surrounding jungle is alive with the calls of exotic birds, and playful monkeys watch curiously from the treetops. This blend of historical marvel and natural splendor makes Copan not just a site to visit, but a world to experience.
As dusk falls, we are treated to an extraordinary equestrian show back in Guatemala. The horses, majestic and graceful, dance under the stars, their hooves keeping time with the rhythm of our hearts.
Day 3: The Majesty of Catarata Los Amates
On our final day, we venture to Catarata Los Amates. As we journey to Santa Maria Ixhuatan and then via a rugged 4×4 ride, anticipation builds with each mile. When we finally behold the waterfall, it’s as if we’ve stumbled upon the world’s best-kept secret. Water cascades down with a force that echoes through the valley, creating a mist that kisses our faces. We stand there, in the heart of nature’s masterpiece, feeling both humbled and invigorated.
Lunch at Las Marias is more than a meal; it’s a moment to reflect on the incredible sights and sounds we’ve encountered. Each bite seems to carry the flavor of our journey.
As we head back to Guatemala City, a stop at the historic Puente de los Esclavos offers a final glimpse into the rich tapestry of Guatemala’s past. With hearts full of memories and cameras full of photos, we bid farewell to a land that has given us adventures to last a lifetime.
