Overview

As you may know, the Mayan civilization occupied the land from the south of Mexico to all Guatemala and part of Belize and Honduras. The kings of all cities wanted to leave a legacy, that is why we find pyramids, temples, stelae, and other forms of leaving a mark through time.

We know that the immense Mayan cities of Tikal and El Mirador are the most popular in the area of Peten, however, we find other small cities around, such as Tayasal, where El Mirador del Rey Canek is located.

This is one of the last Mayan kingdoms to be conquered by the Spaniards in the year 1697. By that moment, the city of Tayasal was already full of vegetation, so the Spaniards didn´t know about it. The existence of the city was officially reported until 1965, and new discoveries have been made since then.

There is no doubt that you will enjoy this tour from beginning to end. You will be surrounded by nature, Mayan information, stunning views from El Mirador del Rey Canek, and mesmerizing sunset.

FLORES

We are going to start this tour by picking you up at the lobby of your hotel in Flores Island or Santa Elena in Peten. Our professional tourist guide will be ready to take you to one of the most fascinating viewpoints in Peten.

To get to El Mirador del Rey Canek, you will need to take a quick boat ride of approximately 5-10 minutes from the Island of Flores. Get ready to learn about a Mayan civilization that lived in that area and appreciate the stunning sunsets that can be seen at the top of it.

EL REY CANEK VIEWPOINT

Once we get to the other side, we will start an easy 10 minutes hike to get to the viewpoint of El Mirador del Rey Canek. From there, you can see Flores Island, Lake Peten Itza, and even the Mundo Maya International Airport.

Something that not many people know is that the viewpoint is actually the top of a pyramid built by the ancient Mayan King called Canek. It is now covered in vegetation and is used as a viewpoint.

During your visit, we will also tell you about the kingdom of El Rey Canek and the stelae that have been found there recently. Viewing the sunset from the highest point is breathtaking. Appreciate nature, the lake, the island, and relax.

EL REY CANEK VIEWPOINT

While you appreciate the views and enjoy fresh air and nature, we will give you a packed lunch. Enjoy your free time and let our tour guide if you need anything. We´re always happy to help.
