If you are looking for a different activity to do in Lake Atitlan, then we have what you are looking for. We want to take you to have a fully interactive experience with the community of Santiago Atitlan and with the Tul plantation. Tul is a very important plant for the lake communities as they have many uses for it. It is used to purify the lake water, give a home to water animals and birds, and make different crafts.
Join the adventure of getting on a kayuko (a traditional rowing boat), interact with a local from Santiago, have the opportunity to plant one of these plants, and learn about the crafts that are made from this plant. Enjoy to the fullest!
You will need to get to Santiago Atitlan. For that, you can take a collective or private boat. Our tour guide will be waiting for you at the dock. He will be fully uniformed and identified and will have a sign with your name so you can identify him.
Once you arrive in Santiago Atitlan, our expert guide will be waiting for you to start this adventure. We want this to be an experience where you have contact with the people of the community and for this, we will take you with a resident of Santiago Atitlan, he will take us on his Kayuko (artisanal boat with paddle) and take us to the planting area.
Planting Area: When we get to the plantation area, you will see the incredible plant located on the shores around the entire Lake Atitlan. We talk about the Tul plant. This is of great importance for the community since it helps to fight the bacteria that attack the lake, it also works as a natural filter and helps to purify the water, in addition to being the habitat of different marine animals and birds. We cannot ignore the importance of this plant for the indigenous community since with it they make different crafts such as rugs, baskets, among others. The handicrafts help people in the community with economic income and tourists who buy souvenirs to make memories of their visit to Guatemala.
After the plantation tour, we will return to the town of Santiago, where we will show you the different crafts made with the Tul plant. After our tour, you can take advantage of your trip to Santiago Atitlan to walk through the town and learn about its lovely culture.
